Two people have been confirmed dead and one person injured after a lorry they were travelling in plunged into River Kipsonoi at Soimet Bridge along the Kaplong-Bomet highway.
According to the police report, the accident occurred on Sunday August 17, 2025 at around 5am after the lorry hit a bump and lost control before plunging into the river.
Confirming the incident, Bomet Police Boss Edward Imbwaga said one passenger, a 27-year-old man sustained a fracture in his left leg and is receiving treatment at Kapkatet hospital.
At the same time, the police boss urged drivers to remain alert on roads, especially at night and when it is raining.
Meanwhile, the bodies were moved to Kapkatet morgue.
In the past 24 hours, four people have lost their lives and four others injured in accidents. On Saturday, August 16, two people lost their lives and three others were injured along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The accident occurred after a trailer rammed into an oncoming pick-up truck before crashing into another lorry travelling in the same direction at Kwa Mautiiyo in Malii.
According to Athi River South Sub-County Police Commander David Kandie, the accident occurred at around 7:30am and killed the two on the spot.
Kandie said the victims included a driver from one of the trailers and a 25-year-old man who was seated at the back of the pickup.
The three injured victims were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are recuperating.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), a total of 2,933 fatalities were reported between January and August 10, 2025.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, in a statement on Monday, August 12, said that the government has already dispatched a team that will scrutinise accident-prone areas.
The CS explained that the team will be required to complete the investigations within seven days and submit a technical recommendation that will help in curbing accidents.
