Two people seriously injured during hyena attack in Keiyo North

Two people are nursing injuries after being attacked by a hyena on September 14, 2025 at night in Rimoi area, Keiyo North sub-county, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The two were injured while trying to rescue a sheep from the hyena, which later turned on them.

The incident has sparked fear among residents, who are now worried about their safety.

During the incident, the hyena mauled one of the victims as they attempted to defend themselves.

One of the victims, a middle-aged woman, is still receiving treatment at Iten Referral Hospital, while the other was treated and discharged.

The Director of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in the county, Nelson Cheruiyot, confirmed the incident, saying the agency will compensate the victims.

A similar incident happened in Olderkesi, Narok West Sub-county, on September 4, 2024 when  hyenas attacked homesteads, killing dozens of sheep during the early hours of the night.

The attack, which was part of a recurring problem, left the community fearful of increased poverty due to the persistent threat from wild animals.

Joel Kuyo, speaking on behalf of the affected family, expressed his frustration, noting that this is the second attack within two weeks.

“A fortnight ago, we lost 12 sheep to the same hyenas. Now they have returned, and 16 more of our sheep have been killed,” Kuyo said.

He lamented that the repeated losses are jeopardizing the community’s livelihood, as they rely solely on livestock for their survival.

“We depend fully on our livestock. We sell them to buy food, pay school fees, and cover other expenses. This trend of hyena attacks could push us deeper into poverty,” Kuyo added.
