Two people were killed on Monday April 6, 2026 in Ramula, Gem Yala, after residents from Munungo in Vihiga County stormed Ramula Police Station in Siaya County.
The incident occurred during a protest in which demonstrators pelted stones at police officers and vandalized property, including police vehicles.
According to Siaya County Commissioner Nobert Komora on phone, the unrest escalated into a violent confrontation between the crowd and officers deployed to restore order at the trading center.
Witnesses reported that the two victims were shot during the altercation, sparking outrage among locals who accused police of using excessive force.
Michael Otieno, a resident, said: “Our people are dead and we have been sent 10 lorries of police officers here in Ramula. Leave us in peace like we used to. We are sons of Ramula and we are disappointed with something like this.”
He added that more than two people had been shot as police continued to fire tear gas and live bullets, condemning what he described as heavy-handed tactics.
The violence has heightened tensions in the gold-rich Ramula area, where many businesses have closed in fear of further clashes.
Authorities said security operations would continue in the area to prevent further destruction, even as residents demanded calm and an end to what they called harassment by police.
