Two individuals have voluntarily surrendered two AK-47 rifles and 12 rounds of ammunition to the police in the ongoing disarmament efforts in Kerio Valley.
The firearms were surrendered on September 13, 2025 by two individuals from Kabisioi Village, Olot Sub-location in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
One was fitted with a retractable butt and was loaded with twelve rounds of 7.62mm ammunition; the other had a wooden butt and an empty magazine.
“The recovered weapons have been secured and are being held pending further administrative action,” read part of the police report.
The National Police Service commended the cooperation of the local community in supporting the ongoing disarmament efforts while reiterating its commitment to enhancing security and restoring lasting peace in the Kerio Valley.
“Members of the public are encouraged to continue working closely with the security agencies by sharing any information that may help to recover illegal arms or prevent crime. Reports can be made at the nearest police station or anonymously through the toll-free hotlines 999, 911, 112,” police stated.
This comes a few days after Lokapel Akol,a notorious suspected bandit operating along the West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties border in West Pokot, surrendered to authorities and handed over his AK-47 rifle.
Addressing the media shortly after receiving the illegal firearms, West Pokot County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi applauded the suspect and the community for collaborating with the government’s directive on fighting insecurity in Kerio Valley.
This development follows the Kenyan government’s recent announcement of a security operation in the North Rift region, alongside an amnesty program encouraging the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms.
Authorities have expressed hope that this act will inspire others to follow suit, contributing to lasting peace and stability in the region.
