Two police officers attached to Ng’iya Police Post in Siaya County were shot dead in a tragic shooting incident on Sunday June 29, 2025 in the morning.
The two, Constable Martin Mwendwa and Corporal Chesise, were involved in what authorities suspect may have been a result of a personal dispute or a mental health mishap.
The incident occurred at around 6:00 a.m. when Constable Mwendwa allegedly stormed his superior’s residence, armed with a G3 rifle and opened fire, fatally wounding Corporal Chesise in the chest and arms.
Police reported that Constable Mwendwa attempted to flee the scene, but was intercepted and fatally shot by fellow officers during the face-off.
Confirming the incident, Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula said officers in the station swiftly responded after the first shots were heard.
“The matter is under investigation, and we are keen to establish the real cause. We are not ruling out any possibilities yet, including psychological stress,” Wafula said.
Preliminary investigations have revealed a possible disagreement between the two. Police are also evaluating the possibility that Mwendwa may have been undergoing a mental health challenge during the time of the occurrence.
The bodies of the two were taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital, pending an autopsy, as investigations proceed to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
