Uasin Gishu exports 50 in-calf Ayrshire heifers to Nigeria in landmark livestock trade

In a historic achievement for Uasin Gishu County’s livestock sector, 50 in-calf Ayrshire heifers have been successfully exported to Nigeria, marking the county’s first-ever air export of live animals to West Africa.

The milestone, facilitated by Kinanie Agrovet Suppliers Ltd in partnership with local farmers, underscores Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s ongoing efforts to economically empower farmers through his Nguzo Kumi agenda, which champions agricultural transformation and economic growth.

The heifers, sourced from across the county, were airlifted from Eldoret International Airport, symbolizing a new era of international livestock trade for the region.

“This export is a direct result of the county government’s steadfast commitment to transforming the livestock sector,” said Eng. Abraham Kiptalam, Chief Officer for Agriculture and Livestock Development.

“From subsidized AI services and revamped cattle dips to improved disease control and extension services, the county has created the conditions necessary for global market access,” he added.

Rising as a Regional Livestock Hub

The export marks a strategic step in Governor Bii’s broader vision to establish Uasin Gishu as a leading regional hub for quality livestock breeding and international trade.

The county’s progressive, farmer-centric policies are now bearing fruit, not only domestically but also on the global stage.

Compliance and Quality at the Core

Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed, Head of Veterinary Services at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, lauded Uasin Gishu for its strict compliance with international livestock export regulations.

“This successful shipment to Nigeria reflects a high standard of veterinary care and export preparedness. It sets the stage for more countries to confidently source livestock from Uasin Gishu,” said Dr. Mohammed.

Dr. Sylvester Malel, Director of Kinanie Agrovet Suppliers Ltd, confirmed growing interest from several countries in West, East, and the Middle East regions.

“These heifers met rigorous international health and productivity benchmarks,” said Dr. Malel.

“It is a testament to the strong veterinary infrastructure in Uasin Gishu and the dedication of our farmers to best practices.”

Expanding Regional and International Market Reach

Uasin Gishu’s livestock has already penetrated markets in Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania, with further prospects in countries like Saudi Arabia actively under discussion.

This export to Nigeria not only opens a new market but cements the county’s reputation as a reliable source of premium livestock genetics.

With consistent investment and visionary leadership, Uasin Gishu is firmly positioning itself at the heart of Africa’s livestock trade.
