UDA intensifies Coast push as President Ruto allies court support in Kilifi

Top allies of President William Ruto have ramped up a high-stakes grassroots campaign in Ganze, Kilifi County, marking the fourth day of an aggressive United Democratic Alliance (UDA) mobilisation tour aimed at consolidating influence at the Coast.

Led by UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, the leaders are advancing a clear message to residents: align with the ruling party to secure a stake in future political and economic opportunities.

The campaign, however, goes beyond recruitment—it signals a calculated effort to entrench support in a region that has traditionally leaned towards the opposition.

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya sought to reframe the Coast’s place in national politics, describing the region as increasingly central to government decision-making.

The messaging appears designed to counter long-standing grievances of marginalisation that have shaped voting patterns in the region.

At the same time, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi reiterated assurances from the Kenya Kwanza administration, linking political support to development gains and economic inclusion—an argument that continues to define the ruling coalition’s outreach strategy.

UDA Deputy Party Leader Issa Timamy pointed to what he described as growing unity among Coast leaders within the party, hinting at a gradual political shift in a region long viewed as an opposition stronghold.

In a development likely to spark early political contestation, the leaders publicly backed Aisha Jumwa for the Kilifi gubernatorial seat, while at the same time calling for competitive party nominations setting the stage for what could be a bruising contest ahead of the 2027 elections.

As the mobilisation tour heads to Kwale County, the stakes are becoming clearer. The Coast is no longer a peripheral player in Kenya’s politics it is emerging as a critical battleground, with both the ruling party and its rivals expected to intensify efforts to win over a region that could prove decisive in the next election.
