UEFA appoints ethics inspector over alleged racist slur against Vinícius Júnior

UEFA has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to investigate allegations that a racist slur was directed at Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior during Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Benfica.

The first-leg knockout playoff match in Lisbon was halted early in the second half, shortly after Vinícius gave Real Madrid a 1-0 lead. Television cameras captured the 25-year-old speaking to French referee François Letexier, claiming he had been targeted by a discriminatory comment allegedly made by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

Prestianni has denied making any racist remark, stating that the Real Madrid player “misinterpreted what he thought he heard”.

In a statement, UEFA confirmed that an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate “allegations of discriminatory behaviour” during the match. The governing body added that further information will be released in due course.

Benfica responded by saying the club would cooperate fully with the investigation, emphasising “collaboration, transparency and clarity”. While reaffirming its commitment to equality and inclusion, the Portuguese club also said it regretted what it described as a “defamation campaign” against its player.

The match at the Estádio da Luz was stopped for 11 minutes after referee Letexier crossed his arms in front of his face — activating FIFA’s anti-racism protocol. Vinícius moved toward the sideline as tensions escalated, with Real Madrid players reportedly threatening to leave the pitch before play eventually resumed.

The incident followed Vinícius’ goal celebration near the corner flag, which drew frustration from some Benfica players and supporters. He was shown a yellow card for the celebration.

Both managers — Benfica’s José Mourinho and Real Madrid’s Álvaro Arbeloa — were seen speaking to the forward during the stoppage.

The second leg is scheduled to take place in Madrid, with Real holding a 1-0 advantage.

The investigation adds to growing scrutiny over racism in European football, with UEFA now under pressure to act decisively once findings are concluded
