Uganda Cranes announce final CHAN 2024 Squad, eyeing historic run at home

As excitement reaches a fever pitch for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, co-hosts Uganda have officially unveiled their final 25-man squad, a strategic blend of youth and experience drawn exclusively from the domestic league.

The Cranes, led by the inspirational captain Allan Okello, are determined to make a significant impact in front of their home fans when the tournament kicks off across East Africa this weekend.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso and his technical team at FUFA have meticulously selected a squad emphasizing tactical versatility and mental resilience. Uganda finds itself in a highly competitive Group C, where they will face continental heavyweights Algeria, Guinea, Niger, and South Africa. Their CHAN 2024 journey begins with a blockbuster opening fixture against Algeria on Monday, August 4th, at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

This tournament presents a unique and invaluable platform for homegrown Ugandan players to shine on the continental stage, with scouts and clubs from across Africa and beyond expected to be closely monitoring standout performances. The final roster boasts top talents from leading local clubs, including Vipers SC, KCCA FC, SC Villa, and Kitara FC, all of whom have multiple representatives in the national team.

Captain Allan Okello, one of Uganda’s most technically gifted midfielders, will shoulder the crucial leadership role, supported by key talents such as Yunus Sentamu, Enock Ssebagala, and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza. Having exited early in previous CHAN editions, Uganda’s ambition this time is clear: to progress beyond the group stage and genuinely challenge for honors, fueled by the significant home advantage and the passionate local support anticipated to lift their campaign.
