Uganda’s Cranes technical team has narrowed down its provisional squad for the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) to 29 players, as co-head coaches Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza intensify preparations for the continental showpiece.
The announcement follows rigorous training sessions held at the Prisons Ground in Luzira.
The Cranes are gearing up for their seventh appearance in the CHAN tournament, which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania from August 2nd to 30th, 2025.
Adding significant experience to the technical bench, former Cranes captain Denis Onyango has temporarily joined the camp to assist with goalkeeping duties.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper, currently on offseason break, is providing invaluable mentorship to the four goalkeepers in camp: Joel Mutakubwa, Crispas Kusiima, Denis Kiggundu, and Hannington Sebwalunyo. His presence is expected to be a major boost for the aspiring national team custodians.
This trimmed squad marks a crucial phase in the selection process, with the coaching duo set to announce the final 23-man roster before the tournament kicks off.
Among the players dropped from the squad are Vipers SC captain Milton Karisa, who is still recovering from an injury, along with Paul Mucureezi, Enock Walusimbi, Emmanuel Wasswa, and David Owori.
Despite these exclusions, the remaining group still features several prominent figures expected to play pivotal roles if selected for the final squad.
Key players like Allan Okello, Yunus Sentamu, Patrick Kakande, Jude Ssemugabi, and Gavin Kizito are all still in contention and are anticipated to lead Uganda’s charge on home soil. The nation eagerly awaits the final squad announcement as the tournament draws closer.
