Uhuru Kenyatta mourns “dear friend and brother” Edgar Lungu

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, hailing him as a humble and visionary leader.

In a heartfelt condolence message on Friday, June 6, Kenyatta described Lungu as “a dear friend and a brother” whose legacy would live through his service to Zambia and the African continent.

“It’s with deep sorrow and profound sadness that I have learned of the passing of my dear friend and brother H.E. Edgar Changwa Lungu, the former President of the Republic of Zambia,” Kenyatta said, “President Lungu was not only a distinguished statesman who served his country with dedication and honor but also a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith.”

Kenyatta praised Lungu’s commitment to the prosperity and unity of Zambia, recalling his calm and measured leadership during his presidency. He also fondly remembered Lungu’s visit to Kenya, where the two leaders shared and discussed continental development, youth empowerment, and Pan African cooperation.

“I mourn a trusted friend and fondly recall his visit to Kenya and the moments we shared discussing the future of our continent, the role of youths, and the importance of building bridges across our nations. President Lungu carried with him a quiet strength and genuine desire to see Africa thrive in peace and dignity.”

Kenya’s fourth president extended his condolences to Lungu’s widow, Mama Ester Lungu, their children, and the people of Zambia, encouraging them to find solace in the enduring legacy of the late leader.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Mama Ester Lungu, and their children and the people of Zambia during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind, a legacy of service, humility, and statesmanship.”

Lungu died at the age of 68 on Thursday, June 5, his family confirmed. He had been receiving specialised treatment in South Africa for an undisclosed illness.

He led Zambia for six years from 2015 and vacated the office after he was defeated in the 2021 election by current President Hakainde Hichilema.

“In this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu’s service to our country,” Lungu’s daughter, in a short video, said.
