Understanding Kasarani Stadium chaos and ticketing politics

Sema Kasarani kuwaka moto! What was meant to be a peaceful CHAN match in Nairobi on Sunday August 10, 2025 turned into pure drama off the pitch before the match even began.

Fans—thousands of them—broke past security, leapt over fences, and pushed through barricades.

And why? Not because they couldn’t pay, but because the tickets never reached them.

Allegedly, huge chunks of tickets were hoarded by politicians, handed to friends, allies, and VIP guests.

The aim? To keep the loudest, most patriotic fans outside the gates. Some leaders even feared the famous ‘wantam’ chants, so they filled the stadium with ‘safe’ faces.

Worse still, insiders say Kenya vs Zambia tickets are already hoarded, meaning ordinary fans could face the same chaos this weekend.

Meanwhile, ticket cartels cashed in—selling a 200 bob ticket for 600, flooding the gates with fake QR codes and counterfeit wristbands, fueling more anger and confusion.

Sports experts are calling for urgent reforms: transparent online sales, fan zones, and independent stadium oversight.

FKF says security will be tighter, but fans are asking—will that keep them out, or finally let them in?

One thing’s clear: in Kenya, football isn’t just a sport. It’s a right. And when you lock the people out… they will find a way in!
