University students in Kakamega, staged protests claiming they were allegedly cheated after participating in the Linda Mwananchi rally held on Saturday February 21, 2026 at Amalemba grounds in Kakamega County.
The students say they had been mobilized and promised payment to recruit fellow comrades to attend the rally led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other ODM leaders.
According to the protesting students, they spent time and resources mobilizing participants but were allegedly not compensated as agreed after the event.
The aggrieved students expressed frustration, accusing the organizers of failing to honor their promises, prompting protest as they demanded their payments.
The University students have vowed not to be misused by politicians again as the country gears towards electioneering period ahead of the 2027 general election while accusing youthful politicians of not championing the youth agenda.
During the protests, several people, including some of the comrades, were reportedly injured as chaos erupted while security officers moved in to disperse the crowd.
The injured sustained minor injuries, although the exact number of those affected remains unclear.
Efforts to reach the rally organizers for comment were ongoing by the time of going to air.
The Linda Mwananchi rally attracted thousands of residents and leaders allied to the Sifuna-led ODM faction, who addressed political and governance issues affecting the country.
