UoN welcomes 620 Health Sciences freshers as HELB releases Ksh 9.46B lifeline

The University of Nairobi Faculty of Health Sciences has admitted 620 new students for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The students, who reported on Monday, 18th August 2025, will pursue degree programs in Dentistry, Pharmacy, Medicine and Surgery, and Nursing.

Their admission comes just as the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) released a total of Ksh 9.46 billion to support 309,178 university students across the country.

The funds, disbursed on Tuesday, 19th August 2025, comprise Ksh 5.76 billion for tuition fees and Ksh 3.7 billion for student upkeep, offering relief to learners and their families.

Students have been advised to check their HELB portals for confirmation of disbursements and detailed loan account updates.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba affirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that financial constraints do not deny deserving students access to higher education.

“The Government will continue to provide the requisite funding to ensure that higher education remains accessible and affordable and that no student is left behind on account of financial limitations,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Faculty of Health Sciences hosted a formal welcome and orientation ceremony for the new cohort.

The Dean, Prof. George Osanjo, congratulated the students on earning a place at Kenya’s premier university and urged them to embrace discipline and integrity.

“Many great leaders and professionals have walked through these halls and gone on to serve with distinction both locally and globally. You too have the potential to excel if you remain disciplined and committed to your studies,” said Prof. Osanjo.

The students were also introduced to departmental heads who encouraged them to pursue resilience, professionalism, and service as guiding values.

The orientation marked the start of a new chapter for the class of 2025, who now join a vibrant academic community even as government financing, through HELB, cushions thousands of learners from the burden of higher education costs.
