UPA demands immediate release of MP Mukunji amid Saba Saba protests crackdown

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Manyatta Member of Parliament, Gitonga Mukunji, who was arrested on Monday afternoon during the nationwide Saba Saba demonstrations in Kiambu County.

Reports indicate that MP Mukunji was forcibly removed from his vehicle by authorities in Mang’u at approximately 3:00 PM. His current whereabouts remain a concern for the UPA, despite initial reports of him being booked at Kibii Police Station.

In a statement released by UPA Chairman Nyambega Gisesa, the party revealed that Mukunji was booked at Kibii Police Station at 15:53 HRS under OB No. 06/07/07/2025.

However, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kibii later confirmed that the MP had been transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Juja Police Station.

“According to reports, he was booked at Kibii Police Station at 1553Hrs vide OB No. 06/07/07/2025, but the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) has confirmed that he was subsequently transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Juja Police Station,” the UPA statement read, highlighting the troubling lack of transparency.

Despite this information, Mukunji’s exact location remains shrouded in mystery, and his vehicle is reportedly still impounded at Kibii Police Station.

The UPA pointed out a critical discrepancy: while the Occurrence Book at Kibii documents Mukunji’s entry, it contains no record of his release, raising serious questions about due process and accountability.

The OCS reportedly indicated that Mukunji was being held for “holding purposes” and could face charges of incitement to violence.

However, the UPA has strongly criticized the police for allegedly withholding crucial information from Mukunji’s family and legal team, including advocate Njiru Ndegwa, deeming it a blatant violation of his fundamental legal rights.

“We are alarmed by reports that the police have withheld critical information from his spouse and advocates, including Njiru Ndegwa, who are currently with his wife seeking answers,” the party lamented.

The UPA is now making a series of urgent demands, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, full disclosure of his exact whereabouts, an immediate end to any attempts to suppress his constitutional rights, and a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and subsequent transfer.

The party also took the opportunity to mourn the tragic loss of several protestors during the Saba Saba demonstrations. Official figures from the National Police Service indicate a grim toll: 11 fatalities, 52 police officers and 11 civilians injured, and 567 arrests nationwide.

The UPA condemned the use of excessive force by security agencies and demanded a transparent investigation, coupled with accountability for those responsible for the reported casualties.

As public pressure continues to mount, Kenyans keenly await further updates on MP Mukunji’s status and the outcome of ongoing investigations into the conduct of security agencies during the volatile Saba Saba protests.
