Uproar over death of Influencer Albert Ojwang in police cell

Popular social media influencer Albert Ojwang has died under mysterious circumstances as he was being held at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Ojwang was arrested on Saturday June 7, 2027 by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Migori, before he was transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi.

He was reportedly arrested in connection to a controversial post on his X account as authorities claim that the arrest was over a “false publication”.

At the same time, the National Police Service (NPS) released an official statement regarding the death of Ojwang.

“NPS confirms that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody. While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall.

“Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” read part of the police report.

In line with statutory requirements, police reported that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident.

Additionally, NPS reaffirmed its commitment to upholding constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Circumstances surrounding his death have triggered a public outrage and calls for independent investigations.

Audio recordings allegedly captured after Ojwang’s arrest reveal that the influencer was calmly speaking with his friends, asking them to visit him at Central Police Station in Nairobi where he was being held.

In the audio recordings Ojwang sounded composed, self aware and gave no indication of distress or suicidal thoughts.

Meanwhile, civil society organization and digital rights advocate are now demanding CCTV footage from the station, a post mortem report and full transparency from the police.

As the hashtag #JusticeforOjwang continues to trend on X, questions emerge about the accountability of law enforcement agencies in Kenya.
