US launches comprehensive review of relations with Tanzania over human rights violations concerns

The United States has announced a full review of its relationship with Tanzania, citing deepening concerns over human rights violations and threats to regional stability.

In a strongly worded statement, Washington said recent actions by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government have cast doubt on Tanzania’s reliability as a long-standing partner a partnership the U.S. says has historically supported regional security, economic growth, and people-to-people cooperation.

According to the statement, the review was prompted by “ongoing repression of religious freedom and free speech,” continued barriers to American investment, and reports of “disturbing violence” against civilians before and after Tanzania’s October 29 elections.

U.S. officials say these developments have placed American citizens, tourists, and business interests at risk while undermining decades of shared progress.

“The United States cannot ignore actions that endanger our people or compromise stability in the region,” the statement read, stressing that the future of the bilateral relationship will depend entirely on the Tanzanian government’s conduct going forward.

The review marks one of the most serious diplomatic steps the U.S. has taken toward Tanzania in recent years.

This comes at the back of President Samia Suluhu’s “Who are you?” remarks where she delivered a stern message regarding the unrest witnessed in the country on election day, saying the events were orchestrated by foreign actors seeking to undermine Tanzania’s long-standing peace and destabilize the nation’s governance.

In her address, President Samia said outsiders “have been irritated by Tanzania’s stability” and accused them of coming “to destroy this country after destroying their own.”

She emphasized that Tanzania has enjoyed peace for many years a state of affairs that troubles those who wish to disrupt it.
