Following public outcry and a series of fatal accidents, an unknown group of people has demolished the “killer Coptic roundabout” on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway in Mamboleo.
This act of demolition occurred just days after the latest tragedy at the site, which claimed 26 lives.
The incident, which saw an unknown excavator dig out the tarmac during the early hours of Saturday, prompted the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to announce plans for an official redesign of the notorious blackspot.
While KeNHA officers have since arrived at the scene to assess the damage, the regional office has yet to release an official statement.
The demolition follows mounting pressure from locals and leaders to address the safety concerns at the roundabout.
The most recent accident involved a school bus whose driver lost control, resulting in 19 immediate fatalities and additional deaths later in the hospital. The bodies of 22 victims from the bus tragedy were laid to rest today in Nyakach sub-county.
KeNHA has assured residents that the repairs will be carried out swiftly to the highest safety standards, and political leaders have urged the authority to expedite the process.
