An amateur video has emerged, providing crucial new details into the tragic killing of Police Constable Bernard Koome of the Special Police Intercept and Verification (SPIV) unit.
Constable Koome was shot dead on Wednesday evening in Thika West Sub-county during a routine motorcycle inspection that violently escalated.
The chilling footage, now circulating, shows an unidentified individual brandishing what appears to be a gun, pointing it at a motorcycle owner and his pillion passenger.
Upon seeing the weapon, the non-motorcycle owner swiftly surrenders his bike to the gunman. He and his female passenger then scramble to safety as the assailant speeds off on the stolen motorcycle.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who later abandoned the hijacked motorcycle.
Constable Bernard Koome was part of a four-person patrol team when they stopped a rider whose motorcycle lacked the mandatory unique registration code for Thika’s boda boda operators.
According to witness Peter Kariuki, “When one of the officers removed the bike’s ignition key, an argument flared up.” The rider, reportedly eating a pineapple at the time, then overpowered Constable Koome, drew a firearm, and fatally shot him in the throat.
The sudden and brutal nature of the attack left the other officers scrambling for cover, allowing the assailant to escape the immediate scene. It was then that the gunman brazenly hijacked the second motorcycle near Royale Hotel, at gunpoint, before making his getaway.
The newly surfaced video is expected to play a critical role in the ongoing police investigation as they work to apprehend the individual responsible for Constable Koome’s death.
