The viral artwork created as a memorial for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been officially copyrighted.
The artist, Collins Omondi Okello, a creative based in Kisumu, has taken the step to fully own the rights for its commercial use.
Collins Okello registered the artwork with the Kenya Copyright Board. The piece, an Artistic Work, is officially titled ‘Sunset of The Enigma’ and has the copyright registration number RZ81855.
This legal protection is a direct move by the creative to stop businesses from exploiting the tribute. Okello aims to prevent branding businesses from using the art for profit without his express permission.
The creative was quick to clarify that the copyright move is not intended to stop people from sharing or discussing the image.
“This is not an action against reposting or resharing or for fair use; this is to protect against unscrupulous businesspeople who use the artwork for their own commercial gain without seeking authority or following the laid-down guidelines for use of copyrighted works.”
The artwork has been widely adopted by mourners and can be seen on various pieces of commemorative merchandise.
Okello explained that when he created the art, he never intended it to become a commercial success.
“My main aim of doing this work was as a personal tribute to a global icon who is larger than life… This was not meant for commercial purposes.”
He expressed that the piece was a personal way to honour the former Prime Minister, who he said “has shaped our political landscape”.

The artist has completed hundreds of other notable works, having captured the likeness of both local and international personalities over his career.
