A public row has erupted between video director and entertainer VJ Patelo and singer Willy Paul after claims of unpaid dues linked to an upcoming music video.
VJ Patelo took to social media to accuse Willy Paul of refusing to pay him after he featured in the artist’s new project. According to Patelo, the singer had promised to fuel his car and offer him a token of appreciation for his time.
“I showed up with my wife Diana for the shoot, but after everything, Willy Paul went silent. He has been ghosting me and ignoring my calls,” Patelo said.
What was agreed
Willy Paul allegedly promised to cover fuel costs. Patelo expected a token payment for his appearance for the music video.
The agreement was informal and not backed by a written contract. Instead of receiving payment, Patelo claims he has been left in the dark since the shoot wrapped.
Social media reactions
The claims have stirred debate online, with fans and industry players weighing in: some supported Patelo, arguing that artists should respect collaborators.
Others urged both parties to resolve the issue privately to protect the integrity of the project.
Willy Paul’s silence
At the time of publishing, Willy Paul had not responded publicly to the allegations. His upcoming video, which features Patelo and Diana, remains unreleased.
Without an official comment, it is unclear whether the dispute will delay the video’s launch or affect its promotion.
Bigger picture
Unpaid work remains a recurring issue in Kenya’s creative industry where informal agreements often leave directors, actors, and collaborators vulnerable when disputes arise.
A report by the Creative Economy Working Group (2024) found that: 67% of creatives have faced delayed or unpaid dues, 41% said they avoided collaborations due to lack of trust in agreements.
Patelo’s case has once again sparked conversations about professional contracts and fair treatment in the industry.
