Wajir County MP rolls out dignity kits to keep girls in school

Schoolgirls in Junior Secondary Schools across Wajir County received sanitary towels following a flag-off ceremony held at Township Primary School, as drought continues to strain families across the region.

The initiative by the Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Jehow’s office is expected to benefit hundreds of girls and reinforce efforts to safeguard education gains in the arid county.

The distribution targets learners in Wajir East, Wajir West, Eldas, Tarbaj, Wajir South and Wajir North, where prolonged dry conditions have left many households struggling to meet basic needs.

Mr. Surow, a headteacher at Jogbaru Primary School in Wajir East, said the intervention came at a critical moment. “The distribution is timely because many parents are unable to afford sanitary towels due to the drought. This support will help keep our girls in school,” he said.

Madam Asha Abdi from the county Department of Education noted that absenteeism among girls often spikes during tough economic periods. “Provision of dignity kits ensures that our learners do not miss classes because of lack of basic hygiene products. During this drought, such interventions are essential,” she said.

Education officials, headteachers and the Wajir East Deputy County Commissioner witnessed the exercise, underscoring the urgency of sustaining learning amid worsening drought conditions.
