We will protect Kenyans against rogue police officers – President Ruto

President William Ruto has assured Kenyans that the government will protect citizens from rogue police officers by holding accountable any officer who does not abide by the rule of law.

Speaking at the 20th Commemoration of the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) and the Destruction of Illicit Small Arms and Light Weapons at the National Police Leadership in Ngong, Kajiado County, Ruto condemned rogue police activities citing the recent torture of Albert Ojwang’ while in police custody as a disgrace for the National Police Service (NPS).

“We commit to protect Kenyans from rogue police officers. Criminal elements in uniform must be held to account,” he declared, underlining that misconduct and abuse of power will not be tolerated under his administration.

The Head of State added that protecting Kenyans from both external threats and internal abuse remains a top priority for his administration.

“The destruction of these illegal firearms signals our total focus in tackling insecurity and violence in our communities,” President Ruto stated.

“This action affirms our dedication to disarm criminal networks and restore security in all corners of our nation,” he added.

The ceremony, which was held in collaboration with the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA), marked a critical milestone in Kenya’s broader efforts to promote peace and disarmament in her regions.

The event brought together Interior Ministers and delegates from the 15 RECSA Member States to reflect on progress made in promoting peace and disarmament across the Great Lakes Region, Horn of Africa, and bordering states.

To mark the occasion, over 6,000 illicit and obsolete small arms and light weapons (SALW) were destroyed in a symbolic ceremony presided over by H.E. President William Ruto.

The exercise demonstrated the region’s unwavering commitment to ending gun violence and promoting community safety.

The event also featured key statements from the President, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and PS Dr. Raymond Omollo, all of whom emphasized the need for stronger regional collaboration, technological adoption, and public participation in disarmament efforts.
