“We’re like twins” – inside strong media bond of Lofty Matambo and Fridah Mwaka

Two voices, one rhythm, Lofty Matambo and Fridah Mwaka, the Swahili media duo who say their bond has made them feel and think like twins.

The two journalists have built a recognizable partnership in Kenya’s media space after years of working side by side. Though they joke about being “twins,” their journey together has been shaped by experience, mentorship and a shared love for Swahili broadcasting.

Matambo has been in the media industry for about 17 years, while Fridah Mwaka has worked in the field for roughly a decade.

Their paths officially crossed in Mombasa, where they first met before eventually teaming up professionally. What started as a connection quickly grew into a working relationship that has gained popularity amongst their audience.

Their partnership took shape during their time at Radio Maisha, where they hosted together and built a strong following among listeners who appreciated their natural chemistry and energetic Swahili delivery.

After gaining momentum on radio, the pair later moved to television, joining NTV Kenya, where they continued strengthening their brand as a duo.

Because of how closely they work together, many people often assume there is more than friendship between them. But the two are clear about their relationship: they are simply colleagues and friends.

In fact, they say their bond is so straightforward that they comfortably introduce each other to potential partners or people interested in dating them.

Along the way, the journalists say they have received plenty of corrections and guidance from seniors in the industry. Instead of resisting criticism, they chose to embrace it, something they believe has helped them grow and remain relevant.

One of the people who inspired them most is the late veteran journalist and legendary broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela. According to the duo, Mbotela not only encouraged them but also blessed their journey when they officially launched their partnership as a media duo and their YouTube channel.

Like any long-term collaboration, their journey has not been without challenges. Working closely for years requires patience, understanding and respect for each other’s strengths. Still, the pair say the experience has been overwhelmingly positive and rewarding.

Five years into their partnership, the two journalists say the journey has been beautiful, built on trust, shared ambition and a commitment to uplifting Swahili media.

Their story is becoming a reminder within the industry that strong partnerships, when handled with maturity and respect, can grow into something audiences genuinely connect with.
