Two senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) senators from the Luhya community have been summoned by the Luhya Elders’ Forum, to deliberate on forging a way forward for the community.
Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and his Nairobi counterpart Edwin Sifuna were summoned by the elders, representing all the 38 constituencies in Western region, to brief them on the unfolding developments in ODM.
The orange party has seen differences emanating from its own rank, especially after the demise of Raila Odinga. There is a group of politicians who feel that ODM should not support President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027, while others insist the party should stay put in the Broad-based Government.
The forum expressed concern over these conflicting narratives on Raila’s final political position, with a view of deliberating whether the community should remain in the broad-based government arrangement or take a different path.
According to the elders, the issues within ODM directly affect the Luhya community, a key support base for the party.
They also discussed regional development matters, including challenges in the sugar sector, the stalled PanPaper Mills revival, and gold mining disputes affecting Kakamega County residents.
The elders emphasized the need to step in early, unite political leaders, and guide key projects to safeguard community interests.
Osotsi and Sifuna — who are the Deputy Party Leader and Secretary General of ODM respectively — said the consultations were necessary to address community concerns and provide direction.
The meeting comes amid speculation that the two senators may be considering leaving ODM after recent internal disagreements, claims the elders sought to clarify.
The Luhya Elders’ Forum pledged to continue engaging leaders across Western Kenya to promote unity and protect community interests as ODM navigates its current challenges.
