The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is grappling with low voter registration turnout in Siaya County, where only 100 new voters have been enlisted over the past six days.
According to Siaya County Registration Officer Ms. Catherine Bulinda, the continuous voter registration exercise, which began on 29th September 2025, has seen minimal engagement across the county’s five constituencies including Alego/Usonga, Bondo, Rarieda, Gem, and Ugenya.
Speaking on phone to TV47 Digital, she expressed concern about the low numbers, lamenting that despite setting up centers in all the five constituencies, the response has been very poor.
In Alego Usonga constituency, where the IEBC aims to register at least 31,000 new voters between now and 2027, only 16 have turned up since the exercise began.
Constituency Registration Officer Mr. Kennedy K’Ogutu expressed disappointment, noting that the commission had anticipated a strong turnout from young voters, especially those from Generation Z but so far, they have only managed 16.
He said, however, that to address the shortfall, IEBC officials plan to intensify outreach efforts by targeting schools and chiefs’ offices, key locations where many youths collect their National Identity cards.
Mr. K’Ogutu emphasized the need for collaboration with local stakeholders to mobilize eligible voters, adding that shall also be visiting National Registration Bureaus and Huduma Centres to engage those collecting their IDs and encourage them to register.
