Whereabouts of Cameroon President Biya sparks concerns

Following his daughter’s disapproval of his candidacy, Cameroon President Paul Biya’s whereabouts are unknown to Cameroon citizens.

Biya left the country on Sunday on what his office termed as a “private trip to Europe” without elaborating further.

Diplomatic sources said that he was in Geneva, Switzerland for an unofficial meeting. Critics have criticized this move just a week after his daughter asked Cameroonian voters not to vote for him in the upcoming general election.

“The more he stays out of the public eye, the more he maintains the illusion that he is mentally and physically suited for the office,”David Kiwuwa, head of the School of International Studies at the University of Nottingham’s China campus, said.

Death rumours

In September, President Biya’s one week disappearance fueled death rumours. This made a comeback when he did not  appear at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, but instead was represented by his foreign minister.

Biya’s daughter and rapper Brenda Biya deleted the TikTok video she had posted asking the electorate not to vote for his father and said that she is not conversant with politics.

President Biya, aged 92 is the oldest president in the world and has been in power for 43 years since 1982.
