Who is the next face of opposition in Kenya?

Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President has been the topic of discussion since his impeachment from office on 17 October 2024.

The former DP has been condemning the current Kenya Kwanza Government claiming he is the best candidate for 2027 election.

This was after several leaders from the opposition joined the broad-based government, with an agreement between ODM party leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto.

The political landscape shifted slightly after Gachagua started a new political party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

With the former DP launching his new political party on May 13th 2025, Kenyans are left puzzled, especially with how they had speculated a potential alliance between Gachagua and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Matiang’i was formally recognized as the top performing cabinet secretary, and most Kenyans were ready to support him as he jetted back to the country on 18th April 2025 from the United States.

For instance, the former Interior CS unleashed a powerful speech during the launch of his presidential bid in Kisii on May 2, 2025 as he was received with a rousing welcome.

Currently, Matiang’i is viewed as a rising political force, as many Kenyans had anticipated that the two might join forces under the same party to strengthen the opposition front.

For Gachaugua’s presidential bid, many political leaders including, Belgut MP, Nelson Koech have condemned the his DCP party, terming it a tribal formation.

Meanwhile, Gachagua’s remarks of alleged violence during the 2027 elections have sparked a heated debate as leaders criticize him.

Gachagua’s controversial remarks forced some of his supporters to drop their alliance with him especially after President Ruto’s supporters responded to the claims.

Despite all these developments, Matiang’i has remained silent, leading to the question; Who is the true face of the next opposition in 2027 elections?
