The Kenyatta Cup horse racing competition took place on Sunday October 12, 2025 at Ngong racecourse, East Africa’s only horse racing track and Kenya’s only thoroughbred race venue.
It opened in 1954, replacing the old Kariokor racecourse. The course is operated by the Jockey Club of Kenya, which hosts between sixteen and twenty races per year.
The Kenyatta Cup is named after Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first Prime Minister and later its first President. The cup was established to honor the legacy of the late President and his role in leading Kenya to independence.
Thus, the name ‘Kenyatta Cup’ highlights that it is a commemorative piece of history that connects sports with Kenya’s independence.
The Kenyatta Cup is one of Kenya’s most significant horse racing events. Those who win the cup acquire a mark of prestige, which includes the trainers, jockeys, and owners. Even though horse racing in Kenya has been associated with the colonial party, there has been a push towards inclusion and change. Michael Fundi was crowned the youngest champion in the 2024-2025 season.

Aside from the track, the event offers a pop-up market, food and beverage stalls, family-centered activities, and a post-race afterparty.
Fashion and style are expected to pop up, as expected at many sporting events. The event then transitions from horse racing to a night of mingling and entertainment.
With ticket prices going for Ksh 900 per adult, it gives people a chance to enjoy an event equated to being ‘high-class’. The Kenyatta Cup blends Kenya’s equestrian heritage and history with modern culture.
