Why Ministry extended Grade 10 reporting deadline to January 21

The Ministry of Education on Friday, January 16 extended the Grade 10 admission deadline to Wednesday, January 21, in an effort to achieve a 100 per cent transition of learners into senior school.

“We have extended the reporting deadline to January 21 to ensure every learner transitions to senior school. No child should miss out because of administrative or logistical challenges.” Ogamba told TV47.

The decision comes amid growing concern from school administrators and parents over slow reporting, particularly in sub county and extra county schools, where some learners have yet to report due to cost constraints, long travel distances and uncertainty over school preparedness for the new curriculum.

As the January 16 reporting deadline approached, the Ministry data showed that only about 400,000 of the 1.1 million learners placed in Grade 10 senior schools had reported, leaving an estimated 700,000 still at home.

While most national schools are close to full capacity, several extra county and sub-county institutions are still recording low student turnout, fuelling concerns over the transition timeline.

Even with low turnout ithe ministry maintains that all learners can be accommodated, as senior school capacity surpasses the number of students assigned this year.
