Why sleep matters: Experts warn of rising sleep deprivation in Kenya as industry offers solutions

Sleep deprivation is emerging as a growing health and productivity challenge in Kenya, with experts warning that millions of people are not getting the recommended amount of rest needed to maintain physical and mental wellbeing.

The concern has drawn renewed attention following this year’s World Sleep Day, marked on March 13, which highlighted the rising burden of sleep disorders and the need for practical solutions to improve sleep quality.

Globally, specialists say sleep deprivation occurs when individuals consistently fail to get enough rest to allow the body and brain to recover.

According to the World Sleep Society, nearly one in three adults worldwide report sleeping less than the recommended seven to eight hours per night.

The effects go beyond fatigue, with poor sleep linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and depression.

In Kenya, the situation reflects similar trends. Data from the Sleep Diagnostic and Treatment Centre shows that about 40 percent of patients seeking treatment report insomnia, while roughly 30 percent suffer from sleep apnea.

Another 15 percent experience parasomnia, a category of sleep disorders that includes sleepwalking and night terrors.

Medical experts say sleep deprivation can be caused by a range of factors, including stress, long working hours, irregular sleep schedules and environmental conditions such as noise, temperature and poor bedding support. Over time, these factors can affect concentration, mood, memory and workplace performance.

Improving sleep quality often begins with addressing the sleeping environment. Orthopedic specialists note that mattresses and pillows play an important role in maintaining proper spinal alignment and reducing pressure points during sleep.

According to Vikas Patel of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, a supportive sleep surface that follows the natural curve of the spine can significantly improve comfort and help reduce back pain.

Against this backdrop, mattress manufacturer Silentnight recently unveiled a new range of mattresses in Nairobi aimed at improving sleep comfort for different consumer groups.

The products incorporate features such as temperature regulation, breathability and motion isolation, designed to create a more stable sleeping environment.

The unveiling took place at The Hub Karen, Nairobi where company executives and industry representatives discussed the rising concern over sleep deprivation in the country.

Speaking during the launch, Silentnight’s general manager Kate Katisya said the company was responding to growing evidence that poor sleep is becoming a major health and productivity challenge in Kenya.

“There is a need for better sleep in Kenya even as we celebrate World Sleep Day. Without good sleep we lose our productivity. Our role is to create great sleeping solutions,” she said. “We are launching technology that recharges you.”

Meanwhile George Odero, the company’s Supply Chain Manager, said Silentnight designed its mattresses around three core consumer considerations.

“The first factor is comfort, the second is luxury, and the third is Back care, all in consideration of price flexibility. So every mattress is designed to fit every Kenyan, from children, the youth, the elderly and those who aim for luxury,” he said.

Industry stakeholders say improving sleep health has implications beyond individual wellbeing. Representatives from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers note that better rest contributes to higher productivity and overall economic performance.

While new sleep technologies may help address the problem, health professionals emphasize that consistent sleep habits, including maintaining regular bedtimes and limiting screen exposure before sleep, remain essential in tackling sleep deprivation.
