Woman laments losing KSh 400,000 to watermelon farming

After seven years of working in Saudi Arabia as a housekeeper, 39-year-old Wawira Ngungi returned to Kenya in November 2024, hoping to rebuild her life.

Wawira had spent her money supporting her mother’s cancer treatment, and with her mother’s passing, she was determined to re-start.

While still in Saudi Arabia, Wawira was introduced to Joseph Mwangi, a watermelon famer from Nakuru who claimed to have a successful watermelon farming business.

He convinced her that he was an experienced farmer seeking investors to expand his operations. Convinced by his persuasive pitch and the promise of high returns, Wawira decided to invest her savings into the venture.

Upon her return, she met with Mwangi and visited the supposed farm sites. He assured her that the crops were thriving and that her investment was secure. Trusting his words, Wawira transferred KSh 400,000 to Mwangi to fund the cultivation and harvesting of the watermelons.

The Disappearance

However, as the harvest season approached, Wawira contacted Mwangi for updates. He informed her that the rains had destroyed the crops, leaving her with nothing.

Suspicious of his explanation, Wawira visited the farm locations, only to find barren fields with no signs of cultivation.

All attempts by Kawira to reach Mwangi were unfruitful as he ceased all communication and he could not be located.
