Zubeidah Kananu re-elected as Kenya Editors’ Guild president

In a closely fought race that captivated Kenya’s media fraternity, Zubeidah Koome has been re-elected the president of the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG), clinching victory with 72 votes against journalist Yvonne Okwara-Matole, who garnered 58 votes.

The elections, held electronically, saw a total of 130 valid votes cast for the presidential post, highlighting keen participation from guild members.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust shown in me. This is not just a win for me—it’s a win for ethical journalism and editorial independence,” said Koome in her acceptance speech.

In other hotly contested positions, Agnes Mwangangi triumphed as Council Member for Radio, receiving 65 votes against Toepista Nabusoba’s 59. Meanwhile, the Council Member for Academia seat went to Dr. Julius Ombui Bosire, who secured a comfortable lead with 73 votes, defeating Nathan Nayere Masambu who obtained 48.

Several positions were filled unopposed, with Francis Openda assuming the role of Vice President, and Linda Bach, Kenfrey Kiberenge, and Milicent Awuor taking the council member positions for Print, Online Media and Television respectively. The trustees elected are Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba and Mbugua Ng’ang’a.

The election results were officially declared by Returning Officer and Advocate Sophie Kaibiria, who confirmed the accuracy and transparency of the electronic voting process.

“These results reflect the voice of our membership and a continued commitment to uphold professionalism and editorial excellence,” said Kaibiria.

The new leadership comes at a pivotal time, as the media sector navigates challenges of digital disruption, press freedom and credibility.
