Police have launched investigations after a 100-year-old man, Mzee Ombui Orandi, reportedly died in a stampede at Egetuki Centre in Bomachoge Chache Constituency, Kisii County.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday after President William Ruto commissioned the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Gucha Campus, launched the construction of the 11-kilometre Sameta-Egetuki-Ikoba road, and inspected the Egetuki Modern Market.
Mzee Ombui, who had walked three kilometres from his home in Biyonge Village, had joined hundreds of residents at the event.
He was particularly excited about the President’s visit to the area.
After the President’s speech, chaos broke out near the gate of the Kenya Medical Training College Gucha Campus as residents scrambled for Ksh 200 handouts popularly known as “Goserwa”.
The elderly man was caught up in the commotion and collapsed at the entrance. He was found motionless when the crowd dispersed.
Ombui’s family has reported the incident at Ogembo Police Station and is calling for swift investigations to ensure justice for their late patriarch.
Mzee Ombui’s burial arrangements are currently underway.
