At least 33 bodies were exhumed from a mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County on Tuesday, March 24.
A multi-agency team that conducted the exercise, led by Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto, said that 25 of the bodies were children while 8 were adults.
Government Pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge, also part of the team that conducted the exercise, said that there were also six body parts, which included both upper and lower limbs.
Authorities, who concluded the exercise around 6 pm, say the remains were in different stages of decomposition, indicating different times of death and interment.
The exhumed bodies were taken to nmortuary, with focus now shifting to post-mortem examinations to establish the cause of death.
“Lazima ukweli uweze kujulikana hawa ni kina nani waliozikwa hapa, walizikwa hapa kwa sababu gani na hawa wenyewe walikufa vipi,” Hussein Khalid, the Executive Director of Vocal Africa and who was present during the exercise, said.
Earlier reports had indicated that Nyamira County Referral Hospital had obtained a court order to dispose 14 unclaimed bodies at the cemetery. The number of bodies exhumed now raises more questions than answers.
