A total of 21,649,067 Ugandans registered to cast their votes on Thursday, January 15 polls, with 81-year-old President Museveni now extending his rule into a fifth decade.

Ironic Museveni

When he took over power in 1986 after ending years of bloodshed and chaos at the hands of Presidents Idi Amin and Milton Obote, a young Museveni complained that the problem with Africa is leaders who “overstay” their welcome.

But 40 years later, Museveni has joined the ranks of those he once criticised, cementing his position among the world’s longest-serving and oldest leaders.

For Museveni, a former rebel fighter, to achieve this, the Ugandan constitution was amended twice to remove presidential term and age limits.
