“A special day in my political life” – Emotional President Ruto hands over houses to 1,080 families in Mukuru

President William Ruto has termed Tuesday, May 20, 2025 one of the most special days in his political career.

This specific day saw President Ruto officially hand over 1,080 housing units to Mukuru Affordable Housing beneficiaries in Embakasi South, Nairobi.

According to the first in command, the project that sits on a 56-acre land, and touted Kenya’s largest affordable housing project to date, does not only stand as a successful project of the Kenya Kwanza Government. The project, an emotional Ruto said, stands as a symbol that his dream of uplifting the poor in the society is finally coming to fruition.

And as he handed keys to the 1,080 families of Mukuru slums, Ruto — who led the 1,080 families in songs — said it was not just keys to open doors or houses, but keys to welcome the families to a life of dignity.

“Today, we are giving 1,080 families keys, not just to open a door, not just to open a house, but to open a home. The key is to welcome these families into a life of dignity- the commitment I made to Kenyans when I was campaigning for elections,” President Ruto posed, amid loud cheers and screams from the families benefitting from the project.

President Ruto remained upbeat that the project, which will feature 13,248 residential units upon completion, is not the first, neither will it be the last of his administration.

“We are building 150,000 houses like [the new Mukuru Housing Estate] across the country. No Kenyan should live in the slums because that is indignity.”

For the doubting Thomases, the head of state had a word for them. “When I started the Housing Project, many did not believe. They told me I’m a liar. But today, I am here in Mukuru to handover housing units to 1,080 families.”

The handover marked a major milestone in Kenya Kwanza Government’s Affordable Housing Programme, a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to provide decent and affordable housing to millions of Kenyans.

The project is located in Mukuru Met Site in South B, just off Enterprise Road. Priority, the government said, shall be given to residents of Mukuru informal settlements during allocation.
