After Mbeumo, what’s next for Manchester United?

Manchester United have officially wrapped a deal worth up to £71 million for Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo, adding to the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million.

These are two crucial signings aimed at strengthening Ruben Amorim’s attack ahead of the 2025-26 Season.

But the club’s summer business is not done. With the attacking midfield areas now bolstered, United have shifted focus to finding a traditional number nine striker. Despite their two new arrivals, the club still sees Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee as unreliable figures who underperformed last season.

Open scouting continues but the striker market seems to be wearing thin as the window progresses. The Red Devils have already missed on targets such as Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres who preferred moves to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively. Additionally, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen was a consideration though financial constraints and wage demands make the deal hard and complicated.

Other names that have been mentioned including Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike are currently heavily-linked with a switch to other clubs. Liverpool for instance will opt for Ekitike if they fail to secure a move for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak. Another striker on United’s radar is former Everton Moise Kean, who currently plies his trade with Serie A club Fiorentina.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins remains and looks like the most sensible option United could go for as he fits their transfer strategy for this window, being an already established and proven goal scorer in the Premier League. However, being 29 years, he doesn’t provide longevity for the club’s rebulid.

Alternatively, they could look at RB Leizpig’s Benjamin Sesko as they have bee long-time admirers of the Slovenian forward , and even tried to sign him in 2022. Nonetheless, the German club will probably insist for a huge fee and with the new season fast approaching, United cannot afford another drawn out saga.

There are reports that Manchester United are also preparing for potential changes in goalkeeping department, with first choice goalkeeper Andre Onana sidelined due to a long-term hamstring injury. The reports indicate that United are exploring a transfer for 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, priced around £17 million. Lammens’ performances, including 173 saves and 10 clean sheets last season, have attracted attention as a long-term solution and backup amid concerns over Altay Bayındır’s inconsistency.

Further reinforcements may be considered in midfield. As reports suggests Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso has emerged as a possible addition. Personnel departures are considered critical to funding new arrivals. The club continues efforts to offload Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, players deemed surplus to Amorim’s plans and balooning United’s wage bill.
