AK-47 rifle recovered in Baringo as police hunt down suspect

A joint multi-agency security operation carried out in Kakapul, Baringo County, on September 1, 2025, resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle along with 25 rounds of ammunition.

The illegal firearm was seized from the homestead of a known suspect, Korlima Mudang, also known as Kiptum Mudang.

According to security reports, the suspect managed to flee the scene during the early-morning raid and remains at large.

The successful recovery of the weapon marks a significant step in ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.

Baringo and other parts of the North Rift have long struggled with insecurity fueled by armed banditry and cattle rustling, often involving illegal firearms.

Security teams have since intensified operations in the surrounding areas in a bid to track and apprehend the suspect.

Authorities believe that the arrest of Mudang will provide valuable leads in dismantling local gun-running and criminal networks.

In a statement released by the national police service (NPS), the public was urged to support law enforcement efforts by volunteering information.

“We appeal to members of the public with any information on the suspect’s whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or security agency. All information shared will be treated with utmost confidentiality,” the NPS said.

The operation underscores the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in Baringo and across all regions affected by armed criminals.
