Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has declared he will not resign from his position, even after the club’s agonizing 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao.
The loss not only snatched away a trophy but also extinguished United’s last hope of qualifying for European football next season, intensifying scrutiny on Amorim’s future at Old Trafford with the team finishing a dismal 16th in the Premier League.
Speaking after the match, Amorim adopted a defiant yet pragmatic stance regarding his leadership. “In this moment, I’m not going to be here defending myself. It’s not my style, I cannot do it,” he stated.
He continued, expressing a personal struggle, “It’s really hard for me. I have nothing to show to the fans and say ‘I’m going to improve because of this, I have these problems.’ In this moment it’s a little bit of faith, so let’s see”.
Amorim made it clear he would not walk away, emphasizing, “I’m always open. If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit. I’m really confident about my job and, as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things”.
Amorim acknowledged the profound disappointment felt by the club’s supporters after a turbulent season. “I share the pain with our fans. They deserve better. We will try everything about the future, we will see what we are going to do,” he affirmed.
He addressed the challenging prospect of missing out on Champions League football, noting that the team must now regroup and prioritize Premier League improvement. “We need to understand it’s tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League.
But we have to use the other side. We will have more time to think, to work during the week, and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus”.
Reflecting on the final, the Portuguese coach felt his team performed better but failed to convert opportunities.
He defended his team selection, including the decision to start Mason Mount over Alejandro Garnacho, asserting that such choices are always debated but are made with the intent to improve the team and win games.
Despite mounting pressure, Amorim reportedly retains the backing of the Manchester United hierarchy, who view him as integral to their long-term rebuilding plans.
For now, Amorim remains resolute in his determination to reverse the club’s fortunes, but has left the door open for a departure should the club’s leadership and fanbase deem it necessary.
