The ongoing construction of the Kathageri-Kigumo-Kanyuambora road is creating employment opportunities for local residents while improving prospects for trade, transport and access to markets across parts of Runyenjes.
For workers such as Dennis Murimi, the project represents more than the construction of a new road. Murimi, a Runyenjes resident and equipment operator, says the project has provided him with an opportunity to apply and strengthen skills he acquired at Kilimambogo Highways Building and Technology institute.
Murimi started working as an attachment student in 2022 before transitioning into casual employment with the road contractor. “I came in as an attachment student and later got an opportunity to work with the company. I can now operate different types of equipment,” Murimi said.
He said the project has also created employment opportunities for other young people in the area, enabling them to earn an income while gaining practical experience in road construction.
The ongoing works are expected to improve connectivity between Kathageri, Kigumo and Kanyuambora, easing the movement of agricultural produce and passengers.
Local residents say farmers stand to benefit from easier access to markets for crops including maize, cassava and sugarcane. Improved roads are also expected to support boda boda operators and other transport businesses by reducing challenges associated with poor road conditions.

Bernard Wambua, a resident involved in the road works, said improved connectivity would make it easier for farmers to transport their produce to markets.
“People here are farmers. They grow maize, cassava and sugarcane. When the road is good, they will be able to take their produce to the market faster and return home more easily,” he said.
Motorcycle taxi operators are also anticipating increased business as the road becomes more accessible, with improved connectivity expected to make passenger movement along the corridor easier.
Geofrey Njeru, a resident of Kigumo, said the project had generated optimism among residents who had long sought better road infrastructure.
The project has also raised expectations for further infrastructure development in the area, with residents calling for additional roads and other projects that can expand economic opportunities.
The road’s progress comes as communities along the corridor look forward to the completion of the tarmacking works. Residents say a completed road could provide a lasting boost to agriculture, transport, small businesses and access to services.
For workers like Murimi, however, the immediate impact is already visible.
The project has provided jobs and an opportunity for young people to gain practical experience, demonstrating how infrastructure development can simultaneously create short-term employment while laying the foundation for wider economic activity once the road is completed.
