Chinese arrested for operating shop that sells army uniforms, shoes

Police in Kampala, Uganda, have arrested a Chinese national found operating a shop that illegally sells government property.

Jin Yungung, 33, was arrested by the police officers in Ganda area, few kilometres from Uganda’s capital, following an intense operation on May 3, 2024.

His shop was found to be selling government property, specifically army uniforms, shoes and gloves.

During the operation, significant quantities of military equipment were seized from Mr. YUNGUNG’s premises, including uniforms resembling those of the UPDF and SFC.

“His shop… was targeted following intelligence reports,” the Uganda Police Force says. “During the operation, significant quantities of military equipment were seized from Mr. YUNGUNG’s premises, including uniforms resembling those of the UPDF and SFC.”

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Yungung has collaborated with one Frank in the business.

Frank, whom police say is purportedly affiliated to the Special Forces Command (SFC), reportedly provided both the ‘business’ idea and financing.

During the arrest, Yungung admitted that some of the uniforms were sourced from Somalia.

“Furthermore, it was discovered that Mr. YUNGUNG entered Uganda as a tourist, renewing his visa periodically by traveling to neighboring countries,” Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says.
