Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale has issued a sincere apology to cancer patients and their families affected by the sudden failure of a critical cancer treatment machine at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The hospital’s Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Elekta machine, which plays a vital role in radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients, experienced an unexpected technical fault and is currently out of operation.
In a statement released on May 28, KNH announced the immediate activation of referral protocols to ensure that patients continue to receive necessary radiotherapy care despite the disruption.
The hospital also confirmed that the Cobalt radiotherapy machine, which had previously been out of service, is now fully functional and assisting in managing the current patient demand.
CS Duale expressed regret over the impact of the equipment breakdown on patients. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience and disruption this has caused to cancer patients who depend on continuous treatment,” he said. “We understand the physical and emotional challenges cancer patients face, and no one should endure additional hardship due to equipment failure.”
The Cabinet Secretary assured that the Ministry of Health is expediting the procurement process for a replacement LINAC machine through the proper tendering channels. “This matter is being handled with utmost urgency to restore full oncology services at KNH as soon as possible and ensure uninterrupted patient care,” he added.
Meanwhile, affected patients are being referred to other facilities to continue their radiotherapy treatments without delay. The Ministry remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of care, focusing on patient safety, dignity, and positive health outcomes.
“We thank all patients and families for their patience and understanding during this challenging time,” CS Duale concluded, reaffirming the government’s dedication to swiftly restoring critical cancer treatment services at Kenyatta National Hospital.
