KNH reports LINAC machine breakdown, activates contingency measures for Cancer patients

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has announced that its Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Elekta machine, a critical piece of equipment used in cancer treatment, has experienced an unexpected technical failure and is currently out of service.

According to a press release dated 28th May the hospital announced an immediate activation of referral protocols to ensure continuity of care for cancer patients who rely on radiotherapy treatments.

These measures aim to minimize disruption to treatment schedules and maintain quality care during the equipment downtime.

In a positive development, the hospital also announced that its Cobalt radiotherapy machine, which had previously been non-operational, has been fully restored and is now functional. This restoration is meant provide an alternative treatment option for some patients while the LINAC machine remains out of service.

KNH has further fast-tracked the procurement of a new LINAC machine through appropriate tendering channels, with the process now at an advanced stage. This acquisition is expected to fully restore the hospital’s oncology services in the shortest time possible.

“We remain fully committed to delivering world-class, compassionate care,” stated Dr. Sigilai in the press release. The hospital has pledged to provide regular updates on the situation and expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of patients and stakeholders during this challenging period.
