President William Ruto has congratulated Team Kenya for its performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, praising the athletes for flying the country’s flag high on the international stage.
In a message celebrating the team, President Ruto said Kenya had secured 12 medals, three gold, four silver and five bronze, in a performance he described as outstanding.
The President singled out gold medallists Edmund Serem and Faith Cherotich, who won the men’s and women’s 3,000m steeplechase titles respectively, as well as Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang, who claimed gold in the men’s 5,000m.
Ruto also congratulated Stephen Ndangiri Kihu, Simon Kiprop Koech, Diana Wanza and Lilian Odira for winning silver, while Leonard Kipkemoi Bett, Wyclife Kinyamal, Timothy Cheruiyot, Irene Jepkemboi and Joshua Amunga Mboya earned bronze medals.
“We celebrate your outstanding achievements and thank you for flying the Kenyan flag high,” Ruto said, adding, “Asanteni sana.”
The 2026 Commonwealth Games brought together athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, competing across 10 sports in Glasgow.
Kenya’s reported 12-medal haul placed the country 12th overall in the medal standings, behind the leading nations Australia, England and Canada.
England was second, followed by Canada, while Nigeria, Scotland, South Africa, Malaysia, India, Jamaica and New Zealand also finished ahead of Kenya.
Kenya’s strongest showing once again came in athletics, particularly in the middle- and long-distance events, where the country’s athletes continued its long-standing tradition of excellence.
The Glasgow Games were held from July 23 to August 2, 2026, with around 3,000 athletes competing in 215 events.
