Government invests heavily in Galana Kulalu to improve irrigation fed agriculture

The Government has committed resources which will enable the country to improve on irrigation fed agriculture and ensure that more human and animal food is produced locally.

Speaking when he led 38 Principal Secretaries on a tour of the 20,000 Galana Kulalu Food Security Project model farm in Kilifi County, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said Kenya was spending more than Sh. 560 billion on food imports.

He said by investing in irrigation agriculture it will cut down the imports in the country.

The Head of Public Service said through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) program, Galana Kulalu food security project had attracted large scale investors in irrigation farming including Selo limited that is doing, 2000 acres of seed maize and Pwani Farm Ranch that was cultivating edible oil on 2,000 acres.

Livestock PS Jonathan Mueke hailed the investors doing edible oil farming saying that the country which imports Sh. 150 billion of edible oils annually will be in a position itself to produce enough oil and also silage for animals hence addressing the current milk shortage in the country.

Irrigation PS Ephantus Kimotho said more dams were being set up upstream Galana Kulalu that will provide enough water to irrigate more than 300 million acres which are part of the 1 million acres eyed for irrigation in Galana Kulalu.
