CS Murkomen declares Friday, June 6 a public holiday

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Friday, June 6 a public holiday to mark Eid ul-Adha.

Murkomen informed Kenyans of the public holiday via a Gazette Notice dated May 4, 2025.

“IT IS notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, 6th June, 2025, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha,” the gazette notice read.

Eid ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.

The festival remembers the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to; instead, God provided a ram when he was in the act of sacrificing his son.

The festival of sacrifice is a major holiday celebrated by muslims worldwide, three to four days. Most of the muslims will attend the special prayers held at major mosques and Islamic centers.

Eid -Ul-Adha marks the significance of Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering trust in Allah’s plan and his willingness to offer his son as a sacrifice, displaying the depth of his faith. Eid-ul-Adha emphasises the significance of placing absolute trust in Allah’s wisdom, even in situations that may seem challenging or incomprehensible.

Murkomen’s declaration aligns with the government’s tradition of recognising Islamic religious festivals as national holidays to ensure inclusivity and religious freedom.
