The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, on Thursday led a comprehensive food distribution exercise in Eldas Town aimed at cushioning vulnerable households from the harsh effects of the prolonged drought.

The intervention brought relief to hundreds of families across Eldas, where successive failed rains have devastated livelihoods, strained household incomes and pushed many residents to the brink of hunger.

Speaking during the exercise, Ruku reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting lives and restoring hope among communities facing climate-induced hardships.

“We will continue to stand with the people during this difficult period. No Kenyan should sleep hungry because of circumstances beyond their control,” he said.

Area MP Adan Keynan welcomed the intervention, saying it had arrived at the most critical moment. “This support has come at the most critical hour for our people. The drought has stretched families to their limits, but the Government’s response demonstrates that Eldas is not forgotten. We will continue working together to protect livelihoods, keep our children in school and restore dignity to every household,” he noted.

The Cabinet Secretary also toured Eldas Teachers Training College, Eldas Secondary School and Eldas Girls Secondary School, where he engaged administrators and learners on the challenges posed by food insecurity and limited resources.

The visit underscored the Government’s broader strategy to respond swiftly to drought emergencies while strengthening resilience, social protection and education outcomes for affected communities across the region.
