Demos for wages; Chesumei Affordable Housing workers in Nandi down tools over delayed wages

Workers involved in the construction of the Chesumei Affordable Housing Project in Nandi County have downed their tools, protesting the prolonged delay in payment of their wages.

The workers took their grievances to the Namgoi–Kapsabet Road, where they blocked part of the road as they demanded immediate payment of their outstanding wages.

Speaking during the protest, worker Peter Alela said the delayed payments had caused workers serious financial difficulties, making it difficult for them to meet their daily needs and support their families. He called on those responsible for the project to honour their obligations and pay the workers without further delay.

Margaret Muhonja, another worker, said many workers were struggling with rent arrears, debts and other basic expenses due to the prolonged delay in receiving their wages. She urged the authorities to intervene and ensure workers are paid for the work they have already completed.

Meanwhile, Sylvester Onyango said the workers had continued reporting to work and performing their duties despite the payment challenges. He appealed to the government and the company overseeing the project to resolve the matter urgently.

They’ve also called for government intervention, saying workers should not be forced to endure financial hardship while working on a project being implemented using public resources.

The workers have demanded that all outstanding wages be paid immediately, warning that they will not resume work until their concerns are addressed.

They have further urged the government to investigate the delay and ensure that workers’ rights are protected in public-funded projects, including the Affordable Housing Programme.

The protest comes amid growing concerns among the workers over how long they have been expected to continue working without receiving their full wages.
