“Direct threat to my life” – MP Babu Owino claims MCA Robert Alai assaulted him with a gun at Kilimani restaurant

Embakasi Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has called upon relevant authorities to launch investigations into an incident during which he was allegedly assaulted by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai.

In a statement on Sunday, January 4 afternoon, MP Babu has described the incident as a “grave threat” to his life.

It all started on Saturday, January 3 when the youthful lawmaker, having released his bodyguard for Christmas holidays, drove himself to a popular restaurant along Lenana Road in Kilimani, Nairobi County, at the invitation of “a senior cleargyman”.

Babu says he arrived at the venue at around 3:40 pm, held discussions with the clergyman for about twenty minutes, before standing up to leave.

But as he was departing, Babu says he saw a group of people known to him seated at an adjacent table. Out of courtesy, he approached the table and greeted those present, including MCA Alai.

“Without provocation, he accused me of being behind alleged social media attacks on his wife,” Babu wrote. “I calmly explained that I do not know his wife, that she has never wronged me in any way, and that I have no reason whatsoever to involve innocent family members in politics.”

Babu says he further told Alai that it5 is not his style to advance his politics by attacking women. “I hold out respected ladies in the highest regard. I further pointed out that I do not even engage him personally, and therefore could not have engaged his wife.”

At this point, Babu alleges that Alai became aggressive, shoved him, drew a pistol, and struck him on the chest and jaw with it, all in full view of patrons at the establishment.

“I stood my ground and urged him to calm down, asking him to explain what wrong I had committed to warrant such a violent reaction. He appeared to cool down, and we briefly sat, with another person positioning himself between us.”

But moments later, Babu claims that Alai became hostile, picked a glass of water and poured it on his face. By then, a crowd had gathered, and that is when he decided to leave the premises, proceeding to Kilimani Police Station where he reported the matter.

According to Babu, the “unprovoked” attack by Alai was provoked by his political stand, and it constitutes a threat to his life.

MCA Robert Alai is a fierce proponent of the Broad-based Government, while MP Babu Owino is the direct opposite, making his stance clear that President William Ruto is not fit to lead Kenyans, and therefore should only serve for one term.

“This forms a clear pattern of physical harassment, threats and attacks that began upon the demise of our beloved Baba [Raila Odinga]. Kenyans will recall that goons were organized by the Government to attack me during that burial in Siaya – a threat that I braved due to the love I had for Baba,” Babu alleges.
